Mrs. Gladys Lewis Died Wednesday At Newton
Mrs. George (Gladys) Lewis, 58, a long time resident of this city, died at the Skiff hospital in Newton about 10:00 o’clock Wednesday morning. She had been hospitalized about 18 days, her condition gradually growing worse each day. Mrs. Lewis had been in ill health about one year, death resulting from cancer of the bone.
Gladys Marie Cordray, daughter of James Fletcher and Mary Elizabeth Cordray, was born October 1, 1902. She received her early education in the Colfax schools and was united in marriage to George Lewis September 18, 1918. The family had made Colfax their home for a number of years, Mrs. Lewis having worked for eight years prior to her health failure at Carlson’s Department Store.
Left to mourn her passing are her husband, George, who was taken by the Emergency Unit to the Skiff hospital Wednesday morning following a stroke Tuesday evening. Children include Mrs. George (Mildred) Kimberley of Collins; Mrs. Max (Virginia) Bunch of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Howard (Helen) Holdefer of Colfax; Mrs. William (Evelyn) Kimberley of Ft. Dodge, Ia.; Mrs. Robert (Bertine) Sleigh of Killduff; Mrs. Byron (Trula) Fleener and Mrs. James (Georgeana) Lennox of Altoona; Russell and Linda at home. One son, James, preceded her in death in an an accident at the new school house last year.
Two brothers, Otis Cordray of Waterloo and Rex Cordray of LaPorte City, Iowa, plus a host of nieces and nephews and grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were pending at this writing with arrangements not complete.
Burial will be in the McKeever cemetery north of Colfax.
