Viola Dale (Parkhurst) Buckley
March 3, 1934 ~ October 23, 2023 (age 89)

A funeral service for Viola will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 27, 2023, at the Howard Street Christian Church. The family will greet friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials in Viola’s name (checks made payable to Betty Brant) can be left at the church on the day of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton.

Viola, the daughter of Orvil and Mae (Hunzicker) Parkhurst, was born March 3, 1934, at her family’s home in rural Eagleville, MO. She received a master’s degree in education from Northeast Missouri State University. After graduation, she moved to Iowa where she began teaching 2nd grade at Douglas School in Des Moines. Viola was united in marriage with Raymond L. Buckley in 1961 in Des Moines. After her children were born, Viola worked as a substitute teacher in many schools. She was a member of the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax where she was an adult Sunday school teacher for many years. Viola enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, doing crossword and word search puzzles, cooking, and baking—even winning a blue-ribbon Jasper County Fair. She was very sharp-minded and spunky, still making witty comments even as her health was failing. Viola especially loved her family, always making sure to tell her grandchildren how much she loved them.

Viola is survived by three daughters: Betty (Ed) Brant of Colfax, Loretta (Kevin) Bonham of Prairie City, and Amber (Todd) Pederson of Colfax; her grandchildren: Bethany Brant, Mariah Buckley-Van Weelden, Taylor Van Weelden, Bailey Battaglia, Morgan Battaglia, Hope Buckley-Bonham, Faith Buckley-Bonham, Abigail Crane, Jayden McMahon, and Haley O’Connell; 3 great-grandchildren, Seth Brant, Shane Chandler, and Shyleigh Brant; her brother, Carl (Gladys) Parkhurst; and many nieces and nephews.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Buckley; children, LeAnna Buckley and William Buckley; and siblings: Alvin Parkhurst, Loren Parkhurst, Paul Parkhurst, Rollan Parkhurst, and MelvaJean Ramsey.
