Mark E. Hoffert, 62, died of pancreatic cancer, on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 10, at the Newton Church of the Way. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Monday, October 9, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mark’s name (checks made payable to Susan Hoffert) to be used for a project at a later date may be left at the church the day of the service or at the funeral home.

Mark, the son of Carl and Betty (Main) Hoffert, was born on October 13, 1960 in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School in 1979 and began working at the Maytag Company in 1980. On February 28, 1980, Mark was united in marriage with Susan Dannen in Rising Sun, Iowa. In 1990, Mark entered the Skilled Trade Apprenticeship program though the Maytag Company and later earned his Journeyman of Machine Repair and Maintenance. He continued to work at the Maytag Company and later Whirlpool in that same capacity until his retirement in 2020.

Mark was a member of the UAW Local 997, serving as Shop Steward and as a Plant Representative during contract negotiations. He was an active member of the Newton Church of the Way where he was a Deacon and a member of the “A” Team. During elections, Mark also served as a poll attendant.

Mark enjoyed going 100 miles an hour with his after burners lit a flame. From how he got things done to how fast he worked. He had a passion for helping people, making others’ lives easier, and making every person he encountered feel special. After working at his full-time job, he was known to help others by plowing snow, fixing cars, excavating, and simply doing anything and everything he could to help someone out. Mark had a belt buckle that read “Master Mechanic – Fixer of All” which described his life perfectly.

Mark’s legacy of giving of himself will be caried on through his wife and best friend, Susan Hoffert of Newton; children, Sabrina and Scott Smead and Samantha Jutting of Newton; his grandchildren, Karter, Gavin, Luke and Max Smead, Landon Klosterboer, and Liberty Jutting; brothers, Marty and Rae Ann Hoffert of Newton and Jon and Kristy Hoffert of Ankeny; his siblings-in-law, Andy and Terry Dannen of Newton and Judy and Eric Balbiani of Kelley, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and parents-in-law, Glenn and Mary Ann Dannen.
