URBANDALE, Iowa -- Fred Evans, 84, died peacefully on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.Internment was at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Mr. Evans was born December 26, 1923, in Newton, Iowa. He graduated valedictorian from Atalissa High School, then enrolled at the University of Iowa.
While in college he delayed his education to serve his country in the Army Air Corps, then completed his studies by receiving his master's in science of engineering.
He worked for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for 51 years.
When not working, he enjoyed dancing, traveling and spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed his memberships with the Polka Club of Iowa and the German-American Club. Fred made friends everywhere he went.
He is survived by Mary, his longtime friend of 31 years; daughter, Terri; granddaughter, Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Isabelle and Carson Frederick; sisters, Esther Nelsen, Mae Morgan, Betty Ferneau, Betty Pagliai and Phyllis Ammeter; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eva and Harry Evans; brothers, Chuck and Joe Evans; and brother-in-law, Richard Ammeter. ~ The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Des Moines, IA 12 April 2008.
