Norma Jean Warnock
April 8, 1939 - July 26, 2023

Norma Jean Warnock of Colfax, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, July 26th, 2023. She was residing at Bickford Assisted Living in Urbandale at the time of her death. Funeral services will be held August 2nd, 2023, at 1:00pm in the Colfax First United methodist Church. The burial will take place at Cemetery in Colfax, Ia. following the service. The family will greet friends on Tuesday, August 1st, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 pm at the funeral home in Colfax. In Lieu of flowers, memorial can be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com

Norma Jean Warnock was born on April 8th, 1939, in Grant County Minnesota to Noretta Mildred Thompson. After her mother’s passing Norma and her 8 younger siblings were taken in by the Lutheran Welfare Society. During this time all 9 children were baptized into the Lutheran Church. Two of brothers went to Boys Town in Omaha and the remaining of her siblings were adopted with sealed adoption records. Norma Jean at the age of 13 then lived with foster parents Rev. Woodworth and Adeline Hawn. She attended school in Colfax until her senior year when she moved and graduated from Longville High School in Longville Minnesota in 1958. She remained close to many of her fellow classmates from Colfax throughout her life. Norma Jean then attended beauty school in Des Moines Iowa and graduated in 1959. Norma worked at Younkers in Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines, Iowa for 5 years.

Norma Jean married James G. Warnock on March 27th, 1960. From this union they were blessed with three daughters, Kathryn born January 15th, 1961, Jeanette born February 12th, 1963, and Deborah born October 14th, 1968.

After her 2nd daughter was born Norma enjoyed staying home with her children and working on the family farm. Norma raised sheep, turkeys and helped with tractor work in the fields every year. Norma was known for her wonderful potato salad, and it was often requested when she was going to a picnic or potluck with friends. She loved flowers and enjoyed antique shopping, and bargain hunting. Norma collected porcelain dolls, pink milk glass, cuckoo clocks, angels and stuffed bears. She also enjoyed being the passenger on the back of Jim’s motorcycles as well as camping and travelling.

Norma was able to find and reconnect with all her siblings as an adult despite their adoption records being closed. She also organized a sibling family reunion that was held every year. All of her siblings did attend this reunion however not all came at one time.

Norma was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women’s organization, Order of Eastern Star (56 years) and PEO. Over the years she held many offices in the above organizations.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband Jim of 63 years; three daughters, Kathy (George) Dickerson, Jeanette (Donnie) Roam, and Deborah Moore; five grandchildren Pamela Weigle, Teresa (Jeremy) Homeyer, George (Alisha) Dickerson Jr., Hannah Moore, Joseph Moore; a great grandson, Cruz Dickerson. She is also survived by two foreign exchange students Sandra (Ivan) Castano and Yasna Escobar.

Preceding Norma Jean in death are her mother, foster parents, stepfather, Ervin Neville; five brothers and three sisters, Merlyn Neville, Ervin Neville Jr., Sharon Orr, Walter Wilkie, Carl Pinke, Steven Carmickel, Loretta Hamlin, and Robin Brink. She is also preceded in death by her niece Jennifer Crozier, great grandson, Cash Dickerson, and her foster brothers and sister, Wayne Hawn, Charles Hawn, and Carol Rhiner.
