Reva Margaret McConeghey
November 21, 1929 - June 15, 2023

Reva Margaret (Marshall) McConeghey, age 93, was welcomed into her eternal heavenly home on June 15, 2023. She was born east of Monroe to Roy and Olive (Woody) Marshall on November 21, 1929 joining older sisters Doris & Evelyn. She grew up in the depression so there was not many store-bought niceties or frills, but the family had musical talent and enjoyed playing instruments together and for local dances; father playing fiddle and mandolin, sister Evelyn playing guitar and other instruments, and Reva chording on the piano. Reva attended Cottage Grove school five miles east of Monroe through 8th grade. She was honored to be the Jasper County Queen in 1946 at the centennial celebration and was chosen for this honor by comedian and actor Bob Hope. Reva at age 18 married Dale, her beloved husband, at Tool’s Chapel Church east of Monroe and were the 1st couple married in the church in 1948. They farmed on Dale’s home place for ten years and then moved to a 40-acre farm close by.

These years were full of love and arduous work and their family soon included four children, Gary Dale, Elaine Ruth, Alan Roy & Sheryl Lynn. Reva was a hard-working farm wife; choring, milking cows, selling eggs, raising and butchering chickens, and maintaining a huge garden & orchard, with the subsequent canning, freezing, and cooking of the produce. Life in the summer centered around what vegetable or fruit was ripe and getting it “put up” and safely in the cave for winter use. Reva could cook up a storm and many people enjoyed eating meals at her home especially in the summer when the food was fresh (hours old) from picking. Homemade ice cream was a staple every summer with batches made for birthdays and shared with everyone who visited. Coffeetime with freshly baked treats enjoyed with family and friends was a revered custom. Reva was a life-long learner, earning her GED in 1968 and reading constantly, even enjoying reading encyclopedias for fun! Her walk with her personal Savior Jesus Christ was nurtured and a lifelong pursuit, with her being a life-long member of Tool’s Chapel Church and then when it closed joining the Monroe Methodist Church and singing in the choir there many years. When the children were older, Reva contributed to the family fund by wallpapering/painting, shucking corn at PAG, waitressing at the Dairy Sweet, and working at the post office for 15 years. Reva and husband Dale enjoyed card playing dates with neighbors, Dale & Dorothy Mullins, Lloyd & Catherine Nolin, and Zeke & Phyllis Machin. Many hours were enjoyed playing 500, Farkle, Pitch, and Canasta. Reva commented “life was not as much fun” after husband Dale died in 2010. She continued living alone in Monroe for 5 years, then moved to an apartment in Pella, and then assisted living. In November 2021, Reva fell and broke her hip and was cared for competently and skillfully by Valley View Village staff in Des Moines until her death.
