Obituary
Gary Michael Jones, 80, of Colfax peacefully passed away on May 27, 2023, at the MercyOne WesleyLife hospice care in Newton.Born in Colfax on May 18, 1943, to parents Donald “Mike” and Gertrude (née Border) Jones, Gary grew up in a full house with his three older sisters, Donna, Gertrude “Ann” and Patricia and younger brother, Donald “Craig.”
He graduated from Colfax High School in 1961 and went on to serve in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era. After returning to Iowa, Gary worked for Pittsburgh Steele and eventually for his long-time employer, Maytag. He held many positions during his 33-year tenure at Maytag and ended his career as the supervisor of the paint department. He retired in 2001.
With his interests in restoring classic cars, fishing and hanging with the guys in the garage, Gary was well-known as a man’s man. He was someone who could fix things around the house, install a washer and dryer and grow the perfect tomato. He could wow you his with his cooking and baking skills and was always ready to try a new recipe.
Gary loved a good drink, a good song and a good laugh. He was famous for dancing to 50s and 60s tunes and throwing impromptu parties on the deck. His friendly demeanor won him many friends and fellow jokesters, even during his final weeks in the hospital.
Gary had been a member of the Colfax United Methodist Church since Nov. 4. 1984, and for many years, was an active member of the church’s Board of Trustees. Along with his involvement at the church, Gary will also be remembered for his work with the Skunk River Cruzers Car Club and the Annual Colfax Classic Car Show.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda (née Stremfel) Jones. Together, they raised two daughters, Sara (Charles “Chuck” Metcalf) Jones and Shaela (Bradley) Meister and are the grandparents to Sharon (Rene) Darby, Millie Metcalf and Gretchen Meister. During their many years as a couple, Gary and Linda enjoyed pizza nights, traveling to the Lake of the Ozarks and playing ball with their yorkie, Sophie.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, sister Donna, brothers-in-law Bob Patterson and Larry Shuey and daughter Ashley.
