Phyllis Arlene (McWhirter) Ballard
March 10, 1947 ~ June 21, 2023 (age 76)

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m., Tuesday, June 27, at the funeral home. Memorials in Phyllis’s name can be left at the funeral home. (Please make checks payable to Tony Cupples.)

Phyllis, the daughter of Robert and Lillian (Robinett) McWhirter, was born March 10, 1947, in Newton. She grew up in Baxter and graduated from Baxter High School in 1965. She lived in Newton for her entire adult life. Phyllis was united in marriage with Larry Ballard on June 27, 1980, in Newton. She worked as a CNA for 35 years, 30 of those at Heritage Manor in Newton, and loved what she did. Phyllis was a member of the First Baptist Church and was an avid square dancer for many years. She enjoyed going to Lake Okoboji with her family, watching her soaps each day, and was dedicated to helping others and giving in any way she could. Her greatest joy was her family—especially her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Those left to honor Phyllis’s memory include her son, Tony (Kim) Cupples of Ozark, MO; her step-daughter, Shannon (Duane) Musser of Williamsburg; her grandchildren, Scott (Fannie) Cupples of Spencer, Destiny (Nate) Balk of Newton, Drake Cupples of Newton, Alex (Sarah) Cupples of Loveland, CO, and Emily Kain of Nixan, MO; her great-grandchildren, Grace and Quinn Balk, Zander Cupples, Rylan Cupples, Monroe Kain, and Ethan Cupples; her siblings, Linda McWhirter of Newton, Laurie (Jim) Davis of Jupiter, FL, and Sharon (Tom) DeWitt of Rogersville, MO; and many nieces and nephews.

Her family is at peace knowing that in death, Phyllis was reunited with her husband, Larry; her sons, William Cupples and Timothy Ballard; her grandson, Dillon Cupples; her parents; her parents-in-law, Orville and Bonnie Ballard; her siblings, Carolyn Ankeney, Robert McWhirter, and Gene McWhirter; and nephew, Brian McWhirter.
