Shirley L. Smith, 72, of 1010 S. 15th Ave. W. died Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Community Heights Alliance Church, 1000 E. 12th St. S. in Newton, with the Rev. Larry Spader officiating. Burial will be at Chester Cemetery in rural Grinnell.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in her name, God's Vision at Community Heights Alliance Church, RSVP, Skiff Medical Center or Progress Industries.

The daughter of Harold H. and Lillie M. (Harris) Tice, she was born Jan. 4, 1933, in Grinnell. She attended Chester No. 2 Country Grade School in rural Grinnell. She graduated from Grinnell Senior High School in 1950 and attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids for two years.

On April 13, 1952, she married Gary F. Smith at Chester Congregational Church, north of Grinnell. She was a ward clerk for Skiff Medical Center in Newton for more than 30 years and retired in 1987.

She was a member of Community Heights Alliance Church, Jasper County Bowling Association, Skiff Auxiliary, Mid-Iowa Women's Investment Club and RSVP. She enjoyed boating and church Bible studies.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband; two sons, Daniel Smith and David (Kim) Smith, all of Newton; two daughters, Cindy (Scott) Dittmer and Amy (Chad) Ray, also of Newton; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy (Tom) Crooks of Boone.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
