Genevieve A (Van Genderen) Dop
October 4, 1930 ~ February 3, 2023 (age 92)

Genevieve Arlene Dop, 92, of Newton died on Friday, February 3, 2023, at Newton Village. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 17, 2023, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service and again after the service with a lunch on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials to Newton Fire and Ambulance may be left at the funeral home.

Genevieve, the daughter of John and Elizabeth “Bertha” (Jansen) Van Genderen, was born on October 4, 1930, in rural Sully. As a child she lived southeast of Sully and then New Sharon before her family moved to the Van Genderen family farm northeast of Sully. During that time Genevieve attended country school. In 1943, her family moved to a farm northeast of Monroe and later to Reasnor. Genevieve attended grade school by Monroe and later graduated from Monroe High School in 1949.

On January 23, 1951, Genevieve was united in marriage with Wilson Dop in rural Monroe. Shortly after, Wilson went to serve his country in the U.S. Army, while he was away from home Genevieve worked at Rolscreen in Pella and then at the Vernon Company in Newton. Upon his return, she became a homemaker. In 1956, they made their home on a farm in rural Prairie City and in 1969 moved to the Dop family farm in rural Reasnor. In 2019, she moved to Newton.

Genevieve was a member of the The Way Church in Newton, formerly the Newton Community Reformed Church. She enjoyed weekly sewing and quilting days and also going to Bible studies. She had previously attended the Prairie City Reformed Church and the Otley Reformed Church. Most recently she was attending chapel at Newton Village where she resided. Genevieve liked doing embroidery work, gardening, and canning. She also was a talented baker making cookies, cinnamon rolls, and homemade breads.

Those left to honor Genevieve’s memory are three children, Rodger (Lisa) Dop of Monroe, Douglas (Ruth Ann) Dop of Monroe, and Betty Ann Dop of Newton; son-in-law, Dan Shea of Newton; her five grandchildren, Tracy (Jay) Porter, Jason (Jessie) Dop, Matthew (Allison) Dop, Kurtis Dop, and Kyle (Erin) Dop; 11 great-grandchildren, Jonas, Isaac, Noah, Taylor, Trenton, Theodore, McKenzie, Cooper, Owen, Brooklynn and Levi; her siblings, Lois Van Gorp of Reasnor, Lila De Kruyff of Otley, and Ron Van Genderen of Monroe; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilson Dop; daughter, Donna Shea; her siblings, Russell (Ruth) Van Genderen and Norma (Harris) Van Waardhuizen; and siblings-in-law, Carroll Van Gorp, James De Kruyff, and Lois Van Genderen.
