Adella Irene Bittner, age 88, died last Saturday December 15, 2007, at Friendship Haven's Tompkins Memorial Health Center in Fort Dodge, IA.
Adella was born August 2, 1919, at Floris in Davis County, IA, to Ira E. Staubus and Georgia M. Anson. She spent most of her life in Iowa, raising a family of ten on a farm near Thayer in Union County, relying on big gardens and lots of canning to do the job. With her family mostly raised, she finished her high school diploma and then became a Licensed Practical Nurse. After the death of her husband, Cecil Arlo Bittner in 1971, she lived in Osceola in Clark County, until moving to Friendship Haven's assisted living in 1986. She was a devoted member of the Methodist Church in Thayer and later in Osceola. She especially loved painting, her flower gardens, and traveling (Alaska, Europe, Hawaii and spent ten winters in Costa Rica) and took great pride in the successes and education of her family.
Adella is survived by family as follows: son, James Ellsworth and wife Iris of Murfreesboro, TN; daughter, Judith Ann and husband Eugene Hanson of Aberdeen, WA; son, William Wesley and wife Marilyn of Des Moines, IA; son, Chancy Ira and wife Margaret Christian of Urbandale, IA; daughter, Linda Lucile Burgess of Grimes, IA; daughter, Jeanie Marie and husband Jose Ayub of San Jose, Costa Rica; daughter, Bonnie Sue and husband Steve Rathbun of Denver, IA; daughter, Connie Lou Bittner and husband Jonathan Pease of Cedar Burg, WI; 21 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren. Adella is also survived by two brothers and one sister: Henry Staubus of Indianola, IA and John Staubus of Columbia Heights, MN and Alice Fredrickson of Hesperia, CA. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by brother Murl Staubus of San Jose, CA and son-in-law Tom Burgess of Grimes, IA.
A memorial service will be held at Friendship Haven's Celebration Center at 420 Kenyon Road in Fort Dodge, IA on Thursday, December 20, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. Her ashes will be scattered upon a flower garden and/or buried at Ashton Cemetery near Baxter, Iowa, at a summer family gathering.
Memorials may be directed to Friendship Haven to establish and maintain a flower garden.
