War Veteran - Co. C, 36th O. Inf. N.G.

Mrs. Levi Harris, of Sherman township, this week was called to pass through the double bereavement of losing husband and brother within two days. Her husband died last Tuesday, aged 74 years, and was buried on Wednesday afternoon at McKeever cemetery in Poweshiek township, only a few hours before her brother, D. Y. Cross, passed away at his home 2 ½ miles north of town; aged 54 years. Both of these men were veterans of the war of the rebellion.
Mr. Cross’ death resulted from a combination of pulmonary troubles and an affliction brought on by exposure while in the army. His second wife and her two children, and four children by his first wife survive him.
The funeral from the farm home yesterday afternoon was conducted by the G.A.R. order of which he was a member. Rev. T. A. Lampman, of Greencastle, conducted a short service and the remains were interred in McKeever cemetery. Mr. Cross and Mr. Harris were respected wherever known.
