Genevieve Theresa Gannon “Gen”, age 90, of Colfax, passed to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at UnityPoint Hospice in Des Moines after suffering a stroke. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, January 9, 2023 at 10:30 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax. Burial will take place at McKeever Cemetery. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Progress Industries and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com

The daughter of Herbert and Christine (Weber) Wendling, Gen was born on January 21, 1932, in Independence, IA. She graduated from St. John High School in Independence, IA and went on to college in Greeley CO, and then to Mount Mercy College where she received her Teaching Certificate. She accepted her first teaching position in Colfax, IA where she met and married her husband Edward Joseph Gannon Jr. “Joe.” Together they raised their 8 children with Gen lovingly fulfilling roles of mother, wife, daughter, sibling, homemaker, and friend to those who were blessed to know her. Genevieve was dedicated to the parish of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Activities she was involved in included Alter and Rosary Society, Catechism teacher, and choir member, as she always had a love for music. She also actively supported her community by volunteering with La Femme Women’s Club and the Food Pantry. She was passionate about assisting children with reading in elementary school. For many years Gen and her husband owned and operated Gannon’s Drive-In in Colfax. Gen enjoyed spending time bird watching, gardening, and just being outdoors. In addition, she was an avid reader. Throughout her life she exemplified generosity, compassion, and commitment to family and community.

Those left to honor her memory include her children; Mark Gannon, Julie (Ron Donoho) Gannon, Douglas Gannon, Joan (Jeff) Hazen, Eric Gannon, and Ann (Rob Beagel) Gannon - Beagel; five grandchildren; Jack Barnett, Luke Hazen, Jake Hazen, Abby Beagel, Grant Beagel and a brother, Louis (Shirley) Wendling. Gen also left numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband and two sons; Kurt and Matthew. Siblings preceding her in death are Loretta Lillis, Mary O’Meara, Eleanor Laird, Herbert Wendling, Jr., Anne Sandey, and Irene Bagby.
