June 15, 1926 ~ January 1, 2023 (age 96)

Lillian Marie Leadmon, 96, of Newton died on Sunday, January 1, 2023, at Newton Village. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, January 6, 2023, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials to Lillian’s family (checks to Susan Metz) to be used to place a bench in the courtyard at Newton Village may be left at the funeral home.

Lillian, the daughter of Charles and Flonnie (Thompson) Thomas, was born on June 15, 1926 in Rock Creek. She grew up in Poweshiek County living in Grinnell, Malcom, and Montezuma. In 1944, Lillian graduated from Montezuma High School and then moved to Newton. On November 1, 1946, she was united in marriage with Byron Leadmon in Newton. She was a homemaker, raising their three children, Gary, Janet, and Susan.

Lillian was a member of the First Baptist Church, Elizabeth Circle, American Baptist Women, Progressive Builders Sunday School Class, and the Sunshine Club. She also was a member of the PTA and volunteered at the polls during elections. Lillian enjoyed sewing, baking and cooking, flower gardening, mushroom hunting, walking, and playing scrabble. She loved spending time with her family including watching her grandchildren and going to their activities. More recently she was a “Happy Greeter” by the fireplace at Newton Village Care Center.

Lillian is survived by her children, Gary Leadmon of Los Angeles, California, Janet (George) Clark of Newton, and Susan (Del) Metz of Newton; grandchildren, Cyle (Amanda) Brown, Lacey (David) Nickelson, Mackenzie Clark, Alicia (Patrick) Reardon, and Josh (Bekah) Metz; and her great-grandchildren, Caden, Jojo, and Caylee Brown, Gracelyn and Donovan Nickelson, and Charlotte and Evelyn Reardon. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Byron; and seven siblings.
