Fatal Stroke of Lightning
Vandalia, July 29 – Special: On Wednesday afternoon as Chas. Bowers, of Vandalia, was driving with a load of grain to a threshing machine he was struck by lightning and instantly killed, as was also one of the horses driven by him. On the same day four children of James Phelps, of Vandalia, were standing near a tree which was struck. All were knocked down and one received the bolt, which struck him on the head, then going down his body to the ground, his hat was torn in shreds, as was also his other clothing. He was unconscious for some time, but will recover.
