Gordon L. Dodds, 93, of Newton died on Sunday, December 4, 2022, at Newton Village Health Care. A visitation will be held from 1-2:30 p.m., Friday, December 9, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. At 2:30 p.m., Iowa State Patrol Honors and Military Honors will be given in honor of Gordon’s service. Memorials to the American Legion Post 111 may be left at the funeral home.

Gordon, the son of Ralph and Viola (Reb) Dodds, was born on March 6, 1929, in Davenport. He spent his early childhood in Pleasant Valley and later moved to Davenport. Gordon graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1947. Immediately after high school Gordon worked for the U.S Forestry service in Idaho. He then served his country in the U.S. Navy on the Aircraft Carrier, U.S.S. Wright, during the Korean War.

In 1956, Gordon became a member of the Iowa Highway Patrol as a Highway Patrolman. Gordon was assigned to live in Newton and his main work assignment was HWY 6 from Grinnell to Hubbell Avenue in Des Moines. He worked his entire career mainly in Jasper County. Gordon retired from the Iowa State Patrol as a State Trooper in 1986 after 30 years of service. After retirement, he worked for Larchwood Florist and Flowers on the Courtyard delivering flowers.

On March 30, 1982, Gordon was united in marriage with Judy Ann Herwehe in Newton. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, trips to Branson, Missouri and going for afternoon rides.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Judy Dodds of Newton; son, Gary (Julie) Dodds of Newton and their son, Cameron Dodds of Newton and their daughter, Hayley Dodds of Grinnell; son, Randy Dodds (Linda Suring) of Port Byron, Illinois and their daughters, Kristin Dodds of Savage, Minnesota and her children, Allegra and Elliott; Lindsey (Tyler) Sprouse of Norwalk and their children, Maize and Makayla, Riley Dodds (Chance) of Phoenix, Arizona and their sons, Benjamin and Jameson, and Taylor Dodds (Raiff Cauwels) of Cordova, Illinois and their children, Natalie, Nora, Larry, and John. He is also survived by his step-sons, Gary Baker of Newton and Denny Baker (Sharel Simbro) of Reasnor and their daughter, Stephanie Baker (Brad Tyson) of Elgin, Illinois and their children, Brynn, Brayden, and Beckham; his sister-in-law, Audrey Dodds of Davenport and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Muriel Davis in 2016; and brother, Ralph Dodds in 2018.
