Des Moines – Byron Vance Fleener, 71, of Des Moines died of leukemia Sunday, April 19, at his home.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax with Vernon Spinner and Richard Davis officiating. Burial will be at the McKeever Cemetery in Colfax.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home Wednesday after noon. Family will be present Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials to Mercy Hospice will be accepted.
The son of Harry C. and Elsie Morgart Fleener, he was born Jan. 23, 1927, in Triopi, Minn. He was a graduate of East High School in Des Moines.
He married Trula Lewis Jan. 12, 1948 in Colfax.
Raised in Newburg, he has been a resident of Des Moines since 1948.
Mr. Fleener was employed by the Polk County road maintenance department before retiring in 1980. He was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Byron Van Jr. and Rita of Newhall, a daughter, Trudy Ann Goski of Tallahassee, Fla.; four grandchildren; a sister, Norma Rice of Des Moines; and five brothers, Delmar of Iowa City, Gene of Des Moines, Loren of Central City, Ore., and Mel and Bill, both of San Jose, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
