Tractor Driver Died In Accident
Archie L. (Pat) Borts, 70, Route One, was killed yesterday when the tractor he was driving was hit by a semi-truck on U.S. 69.
The accident happened about 12:40 p.m. one mile north of Ames. Driver of the truck was William C. Wigginton, 27, Burlington.
Investigating officers said Borts was on his way to help a neighbor shell corn when the accident occurred. He was thrown from the tractor to the shoulder of the highway by the impact.
The tractor he was driving and the trailer were completely demolished in the accident and an estimated $500 damage was done to the truck, owned by Modern Welding Co., Burlington.
The accident was investigated by Iowa Highway Patrolman William Severin, Sheriff Ivan Shalley and Sheriff’s Deputy Dean Drake.
Born at Mingo, Mr. Borts came to Ames in 1920 and farmed here.
He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the First Christian Church.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from Adams Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Key officiating. Burial will be at Greencastle.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle, in April, 1962.
Survivors include three sons, Lloyd, Route One; Willard, Nevada; and Max, Gilbert; four brothers, John, Rhodes; Russell and Pete, Colfax; and Ward, Milwaukee, Wis.; two sisters, Mrs. Lulu McKeever and Mrs. Thelma Zillion, Newton, and four grandchildren.
