Died – At his home in Clear Creek township, on Tuesday, December 6, 1887, James B. Crawford; aged 72 years, 1 month and 21 days.
Mr. Crawford was born in Brooke county, Virginia, October 14, 1815. Married Eliza Ann Walters on May 23, 1848. They removed to Iowa in 1855, and, with the exception of two years, have lived in the home where he died. He united with the Congregational church at its organization in the neighborhood 19 years ago. As an evidence of his abiding faith almost the last words he uttered bear testimony: Jesus calls, and I must go.”
He leaves a wife and six children – two boys and four girls, two of whom, Mrs. Mary Campbell and Henry W. Crawford, came from Audubon to attend the funeral. The other children, Mrs. James Tramel, and Mrs. Frank Baker reside in the neighborhood, and John and Nellie are at home. How appropriate the inspired words: “They shalt come to thy grave in a full age; like as a chock of corn cometh in his season.” – Job v, 26.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. S. N. Vail on Wednesday, December 7. A large concourse of people followed the deceased to his burial in sympathy for the afflicted friends and as an evidence of their high esteem for the dead. The old arm chair is vacant, but the mansions of our Father’s house have another occupant. “Blessed are the dead that died in the Lord.”
