Harley Shepherd, Former Acting Postmaster, Dies
Harley V. Shepherd, 78, of 603 E. 3rd St. S., former acting postmaster of Newton and past president of the Iowa State Rural Letter Carriers Association, died Sunday evening at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Shepherd, a former rural mail carrier and realtor, was a resident of Newton for 65 years.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home. Burial will be in the newton Union Cemetery.
All master Masons are asked to meet at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Masonic Temple
Friends may call at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home after 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Survivors are his wife, Dorothy; two sons, J. D. of Pocahontas and James K. of Kansas City, Kan.; two grandsons, Kendal Bryan Shepherd and Joseph Curtis Shepherd, both of Newton; a granddaughter, Gloria R. Hansen of New Providence; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Arthur B. Shepherd of Mesa, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Shepherd was a member of the Newton Masonic Lodge No. 59 AF and AM, was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, and past president of the Newton Board of Realtors.
The son of Joseph C. and Ids M. Royer Shepherd, he was born Nov. 20, 1898 in Coalmont, Ind.
He was married to Dorothy Croy June 27, 1919 at Marshalltown.
