Jay Cotner Auten, the son of Alexander Colley and Lois Foote Auten, was born September 16, 1872 and died March 17, 1888, of inflamation of the bowels and liver and pneumonia after being sick about two weeks with the measles.

Jay was well liked by all his schoolmates and everyone who knew him. He was an obedient son and loved his parents very much. During his sickness, he was very patient, although he suffered intensely all the time. All that was done from the first to the last was without avail, the medicine not doing any good at any time. He was conscious until the last moment, when he was told he must die, he took it calmly, and bid all goodbye, and wanted them to tell his brother Frank, who was lying sick in another room, goodbye. The funeral was conduced by the Rev. A. S. Loveall at the Hixon Grove Chapel, Sunday, March 18, and his remains were interred in the Slagel cemetery.
