Mrs. Showalter Dies Wednesday; Rites Saturday
Mrs. E. A. “Brownie” (Arlene) Showalter, 57, of 1209 E. 14th St. S., a resident of Newton since 1962, died Wednesday afternoon at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church.
The Rev. Ray Barnett, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton memorial park Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Wallace Funeral Home after 8 a.m. Friday. The casket will not be opened at the church.
Memorial contributions to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund will be accepted.
Survivors are her husband; four sons, William Lynn Johnston of Des Moines, Kenneth A. Showalter of Newton, Bruce Showalter of Marshalltown and Russell W. Showalter of Mason City; a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Marsha R.) George of Newton; and six grandchildren.
Also surviving are four brothers, Don Annis of Newton and Frank Annis Jr., James Herbert Annis and Morris “Mickey” Annis, all of Colfax; and six sisters, Mrs. John (Pearl) Gearhart of Arkansas, Mrs. Elmer (Bernice) Vessel of Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. Spence (Edith) Peters of Corvallis, Ore., Mrs. Delbert (Dorothy) Deaton, and Mrs. Melvin (Joyce) Patterson, both of Newton, and Mrs. Robert (Erma Lee) Kintz of Downeyville, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Showalter was a member of the First Christian Church, BPW and was a past noble grand of the Rebekah Lodge.
Mrs. Showalter, who had been a Newton Daily News employee and owned and operated mason’s Café for 12 years, retiring Feb. 1, 1980.
The daughter of Frank and Maude Laird Annis, she was born Dec. 6, 1922 in Colfax and was graduated from Colfax Community High School in 1940.
She was married Aug. 16, 1946 in Maryville, Kan.
