John Cohlmeyer, a young man employed upon the farm of John Clymer, in Mound Prairie township, four southeast of Colfax, met with a fearful death. He was cleaning out a well, when the walls began to crumbed, first only confining his feet, but the dirt gradually filled up around him, until within the hour he was completely surrounded and was drowned by the rising water. He was conscious to the last, and the moment before the water reached his mouth, plead for relief. Everything possible was done to extricate him by neighbors, who had gathered in large numbers, but without avail.
