Lloyd "LD" Dale Palmer II
July 31, 1944 ~ January 06, 2022 (age 77)

Lloyd Dale “LD” Palmer II, 77, of Lake Ponderosa, formerly of Newton died on Thursday, January 06, 2022, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 12, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, January 11, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Newton Dollars for Scholars may be left at the funeral home.

LD, the son of Lloyd D. and Grace (Dimon) Palmer, was born on July 31, 1944, in Newton. He grew up in Newton and was a graduate of the Newton High School Class of 1962. After high school he began his secondary education at William Penn. LD was then drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam era and was stationed in Alaska. After returning from the service he completed his schooling at Hiram Scott College in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. On October 24, 1970, LD was united in marriage with Glenda Stoeger in Scottsbluff. They lived in Scottsbluff while Glenda completed her schooling and then moved back to Newton for LD to work as the Production Manager at Midwest Manufacturing. After Midwest closed, LD, Glenda, and their daughter, Lynne, moved to Mason City for a short time while LD worked at the Fingerhut Corporation. They then returned to Newton and LD took over the position he still currently holds as General Manager at Newton Waterworks. In 1993, LD and Glenda bought property at Lake Ponderosa. LD loved “lake life” and they eventually resided at Lake Ponderosa full-time. He could always be found enjoying nature, with his bird book close to his chair, while enjoying the company of his dogs.

LD was an active member of the Newton community. He served on the boards of the Newton Country Club, Newton Booster Club, and Newton Development Corporation. He was also a member of Newton Rotary, the Elks, and the Jaycees. LD and Glenda had a wonderful friend circle; they enjoyed getting together frequently and tailgating at many Iowa Hawkeye games and the Iowa Speedway. LD also was a regular with his morning breakfast group and loved going on annual fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada. He was a proud patriot. Although stoic, it was easy to see that the pride and joy of his life was his three grandsons.

Those left to honor LD’s memory are his wife, Glenda Palmer of Lake Ponderosa; daughter, Lynne (Troy) Garton of Newton; grandsons, Tyler, Tanner, and Treycen Garton; and his mother-in-law, Norma McClure of Torrington, Wyoming. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia (Raymond) Link.
