Elsie Mae (Dobbs) Hodge
August 6, 1929 ~ December 20, 2021 (age 92)

Elsie Mae Hodge, 92, of Newton died on Monday, December 20, 2021, at Pella Regional Health Care Center. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at the Newton Baptist Temple. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. Memorials to the Newton Baptist Temple may be left at the church the day of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Elsie, the daughter of Orville and Opal (Garlock) Dobbs, was born on August 6, 1929 in Kirksville, Missouri. She grew up in Kirksville and graduated from Kirksville High School in 1947. In 1950, Elsie was united in marriage to Guy “Bill” Hodge in Kirksville. Shortly after they moved to Newton, Iowa. Elsie was active in the Salvation Army Church, Home League women’s group, and also worked in the Thrift Store. Elsie and Bill moved to Otley for a short time before returning to Newton. She then began going to the Newton Baptist Temple and helped build the church in its current location. She also sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. Elsie enjoyed collecting angels and cooking big family dinners. She lived for her family and her church.

Elsie is survived by her husband, Guy “Bill” Hodge of Newton; children, Linda (Garry) Shives of Newton and Donna Clement of Newton; grandchildren, Shawn (Shaun) Wolfe, Heather Stier, Charity (Justin) Stier Braaksma, and Faith (Thad) Repp; her great-grandchildren, Brooke, Serenity (Cameron), Micah, Hannah (West), Nevaeh (Wyatt), Liberty, and Londyn; one great-great-grandchild on the way; her siblings, Jerry Dobbs of Tennessee and Dean (Rebenia) Dobbs of North Carolina; her many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Dorthea Mills. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Fern White; and brothers, Larry, Albert, and Raymond Dobbs.
