Florence M. Keeney, 98, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab Center in Coralville, Iowa.
Florence was born to Charles H. and Mabel Newsome Crist on July 2, 1906 in Woodburn, Iowa. She graduated from Woodburn High School in 1925 and attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, majoring in music (piano). She later completed an occupational training course at Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines, Iowa. Florence worked as a photo assistant and retoucher at Cochran and Langworthy photo studios in Des Moines.
Florence married F. Morris Keeney December 15, 1945 in Des Moines. They resided in Vandalia, Iowa and farmed until selling the farm, then worked together in piano tuning and repair. Both Florence and Morris were active in voice instruction and church-related choral music in the Des Moines and Prairie City areas. Following Morris's death in June of 1977, Florence continued to live in Vandalia before moving in May of 1991 to the Ecumenical Towers residence in Iowa City, then to Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab Center in November of 1999.
She is survived by two step-sons, David M. Keeney of Woodbury, MN. and Clare D. Keeney of Campbell, California; seven nieces and nephews, Lou Crist (Jan) and Lyndon Crist (Lynda), all of Iowa City. Also Evelyn Kupec (Arnold) of Burr Ridge, Illinois, Louise Prell of Tustin, California, Lowell Crist of Pacific Pallisades, California, Eleanor Willson (John), formerly of New London, Iowa and Ida Florence Williams (Louis), formerly of West Des Moines, Iowa and a number of cousins and great nieces and nephews.
Florence has deeded her body for medical purposes to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, in Iowa City. A memorial service will be scheduled at a future time. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.
She is preceded in death by her parents, four brothers (Howard, Frank, Louis and Paul), her husband and one step-son, Charles Keeney, formerly of Northfield, MN.
