J. D. (Doug) Conrad, 71, of 128 E. 19th St. N. died of respiratory failure Saturday, June 30, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Pat Summers of First Presbyterian Church in Colfax officiating. Burial will be at Vandalia Cemetery in Vandalia at a later date.
Friends may call after 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home where family will be present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Cremation will follow visitation. Memorials will be accepted in his name and may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Chauncey Allen and Ethel Detweiler Conrad, he was born May 10, 1930 in Gibson City, Ill. He was a graduate of Prophetstown High School in Prophetstown, Ill. He also attended Central College in Pella for two years and continued to take many banking education classes. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He lived in Newton from 1959 to 1976 and then from 1996 until the present time. He had also lived in Glidden and Brooklyn. On Aug. 18, 1972, he married Marilyn G. Wallace in Newton.
Mr. Conrad worked for the First Newton National Bank from 1959 to 1976 and the First National Bank in Glidden from 1976 to 1985. Most recently he worked part-time as a clerk for Kum & Go in Newton.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joel and Nancy of Des Moines; and George and Lisa of Gloucester, Va; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mara and Bruce Ouverson of Newton; Teri Miller and friend Randy Wingert of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Shelley and Kent Deal of Colfax and Johnna and Al Moore of Creston; 14 grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Bill Kiskadden of Mountlake Terrace, Wash
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son; a grandson in infancy, and a sister, JoAnne Newcomb.
