Rites Sunday for Fred Bowers, 81
Prairie City – Funeral services for Fred Bowers, 81, former Prairie City community resident, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Altoona Methodist Church.
The Rev. Richard Bentzinger, minister of the church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in the Vandalia Cemetery. Walters Funeral Home at Prairie City is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bowers is survived by three daughters, Mary Smith of Des Moines, Mrs. Gladys Hargis of Ankeny and Mrs. Grace Meister of Altoona; three sons, Clarence of Mitchellville, Lloyd of Bondurant and George B. of Des Moines; a brother, R. F. Bowers of Pleasantville; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Bowers was preceded in death by his wife Feb. 11, 1962.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. William Bowers, he was born Jan. 27, 1881 at Vandalia. He was married to Nellie Booth Dec. 28, 1904 at Runnells.
Mr. Bowers farmed many years in the Prairie City, Runnells and Swan communities before moving to Altoona in 1948. He was a member of the Altoona Methodist Church and the IOOF Lodge.
Mr. Bowers died Thursday at Clarinda.
