Francine Tinkle, 91, of Newton, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2021, at Newton Health Care Center.
A graveside service will begin at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29 at West Liberty Cemetery near Montezuma. The family will receive friends prior to the service from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. The family requests for those attending the visitation to please wear a mask. Memorials may be designated to St. Croix Hospice and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with her family online at smithfh.com.
Glenna Francine Miller was born the daughter of Lafe and Hazel (Swangel) Miller Aug. 21, 1930, in New Sharon. She was raised in New Sharon and graduated from New Sharon High School with the class of 1948.
Fran was united in marriage to Ferril Butcher on July 11, 1948, at the Colfax United Methodist Church. Ferril died Nov. 16, 1968. Fran was united in marriage to Bill Tinkle May 31, 1969, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The family moved to the Leona Tokle farm near Grinnell and later to the Ruth Hannay farm near Grinnell.
Fran was employed at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance, Brenton Bank and was bookkeeper for the Malcom Elevator for several years, retiring in 1993. She enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, traveling and family gatherings.
Fran is survived by her daughter, Marsha Gearhart of Newton; son, Terry (Carol) Butcher of Durham, N.C.; stepson, Bill (Nancy) Tinkle of Grinnell; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ferril Butcher; husband, Bill Tinkle; son-in-law, Harry Gearhart; stepdaughter, Judy Brown; two sisters, Genevieve Clark and Macel Van Gorp; and her brother, Keith Miller.
