David J. Davis, Colfax, Dies on Thursday; Services Sunday at the Colfax Baptist Church; Father of Councilman

David J. Davis, 76, of Colfax, father of Newton City Councilman Victor F. Davis, died Thursday in Colfax of coronary thrombosis.

Funeral services will be on held at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Baptist church in Colfax Rev. John Van Komer and Rev. W. C. Goughenour will officiate at the services. Burial will be in the Colfax cemetery.

Vocal music at the rites will be furnished by Wilma Williams. Pall bearers will be Robert Beals, Edwin Jones, Jack Cline, Ross Cline, Robert Hopkins, and Roger Hopkins.

Mr. Davis was born June 11, 1873, in Merca, Wales. He was the son of William and Gwendolyn Davis. Merca is a coal mining community and when word came that coal mines were being opened at Colfax Mr Davis’ family came to this country about 1890. He was among the first miners in the coal mines that were near Colfax.

On March 11, 1896, He married Elizabeth A. Jones in a ceremony at Oswalt, north of Colfax.

Mr. Davis had been a member of the Knights of Pyhias for 50 years, ranking as a life-time member. He was active in the miners’ union.

Survivors include his widow, two sons, Victor F. Davis of Newton and William J. Davis of Chino, Cal.; one daughter Mary G. Davis of Colfax; four grandchildren, Arthur Montgomery, David and Gwendolyn Davis and Kathy Ann Davis; and one brother, Tom P. Davis of Newton.

One daughter, Vivian, died in 1924.
