L. E. C. Vernocum, Pioneer of Jasper County Died Jan. 6th
L. E. C. Vernocum, veteran of the Civil war, and pioneer of Jasper county passed away at his home in this city Friday, January 6th, after an illness of many weeks.
Mr. Vernocum had his own ideas regarding the Bible and the hereafter and had planned for his own funeral sermon, part of which is given below, following the obituary.
Obituary L. E. C. Vernocum
Loren Eldon Cornelius Vernocum was born in Portage county, Ohio, July 7th, 1841 and died in his home in Colfax, Friday morning, January 6, 1928, after an extended illness, at the unusual age of 86 years, 5 months and 29 days.
At an early age he removed to Lagrange county, Indiana, where he volunteered in the Union Army of the 88th Indiana Infantry.
Mr. Vernocum came to Jasper County, Iowa in 1863, settling in Poweshiek township. On retiring from his farm he moved to this city in 1920 where he has since resided.
In 1863 he married Sarah Jane Mackey to whom two sons, Hugh and William, the latter who died in infancy, were born. The mother of these sons passed away in 1908.
Those of his immediate relatives who mourn his loss are his aged wife, Hattie E., son, Hugh, and wife, four granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
To one who lived his long span of years, the experiences and changes have been great.
A brief funeral service was conducted from the home. Two hymns were sung by the members of the Christian church choir. After the reading of excerpts from the manuscript prepared by Mr. Vernocum, Rev. Tom Foglesong closed the service with prayer. Interment was at the McKeever cemetery.
