Michael Webster Oswalt, son of Barney and Minerva Jane Oswalt, was born in Marshall county, Iowa, on March 19, 1856, and departed this life August 8, 1941, at the General Nursing Home in Chariton, Iowa, at the age of 85 years, 4 months and 20 days.
The greater part of Mr. Oswalt’s younger days were spent around Oswalt and Colfax, Iowa.
On May 23, 1887, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Young at Oswalt, Iowa. To this union ten children were born.
Mr. Oswalt was preceded in death by his wife. The surviving children are Mrs. Bertha Davis, of Madrid; Charles Oswalt and Mrs. Pearl Lay, of Chariton; Lew, of Ridgeway, Mo.; Mrs. Edith Brown, of Newton; Mrs. Ann Ballard, of Russell; Harvey Oswalt, of Newton; John Oswalt, of Michigan City, Ind.; Harold and Arthur Oswalt, of Williamson. Also surviving him are 39 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Sabe Harris, of Sunnyside, Wash.; and three brothers, Jake, Mid and Jim, of Colfax; and a host of friends.
Mr. Oswalt’s illness was of long duration and his sufferings were very great. After his condition failed to respond to medical care, and all that human hands could do, the end came at the Nursing Home in Chariton. His passing will be a loss to all who knew him.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Mitchell, of Williamson, were held Sunday afternoon at one o’clock at the Beardsley funeral home, and burial was in the McKeever cemetery at Colfax.
