Sophia Knapp was born January 17, 1832 at Alexander Bay, New York. Died at the home of her son, Frank Rose, north of Mingo, Friday February 6, 1914, after a weeks illness with pneumonia, aged 82 years.
She was united in marriage to Alexander Rose May 1852. In 1855 they came to Michigan, where they lived until 1879, when they came to Jasper county which has since been her home. To this union eight children were born – four daughters, (and four sons). Mr. Rose died at Mingo April 1901.
Seven children, Frank, of Mingo; George, of Colfax; James, of Santiago; Wm., of Rockwell City, Mrs. Lydia Daft, Colfax, Mrs. Ella Spencer, of Gowrie; and Mrs. Zaida Wilder, of Grinnell, survive and tenderly cared for her last days. She also leaves two brothers, Zera and Wm. Knapp, of Aurora; two sisters, Sarah Deuvall, of Fulton, N.Y., and Betsy Hughes, of Nooksack, Wash., several grandchildren and great-grandchildren to mourn the loss of a good wife and mother, a kind friend and neighbor. She knew the joys and sorrows of pioneer days and bravely toiled at home while the husband fought for the old flag in the 60’s.
The funeral was held at Ashton Sunday 2 p.m. Rev. L. B. Pruitt, pastor of the Baptist church at Colfax, preached a sermon full of comfort and paid a glowing tribute to those who grow old gracefully. His text was II Cor. 5:1 Rev. Matthews read Psalm 90 for a lesson. A quintet sang favorite hymns. The casket was covered with beautiful blossoms and a concourse of friends and neighbors attended. Interment was in the Ashton cemetery beside her husband. The pallbearers were her four sons and two brothers.
