Died – At his residence in Poweshiek township, Jasper county, Iowa, on Thursday, April 11, 1889, Levi Plummer; aged 69 years, 5 months and 11 days.
The funeral, from the residence yesterday afternoon, was conducted by Rev. A. E. Griffith, and notwithstanding the rain quite a large number of his old neighbors and friends were present and joined in the mournful cortege which accompanied his remains to their last resting place in Poweshiek cemetery.
Father Plummer was a native of Indiana. On the 23d of December, 1841, he married the faithful companion who survives him; the fruits of this union were 15 children, 12 of whom (6 boys and 6 girls, all married except one) are still living. He leaves also 32 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
On May 20, 1848, he arrived in Mahaska county, Iowa, and ten months later came to Jasper county and located upon the land which remained his home at the time of his demise. Before leaving Indiana he had united with the Old Methodist church and was always a firm believer in the Christian religion.
Coming here among the first settlers Father Plummer knew and was known by everybody, and all who knew him came to honor and esteem him for his sterling qualities and independence of character and his great-hearted hospitality and simple, unaffected goodness. If he had an enemy he did not know it, and there is none of his old neighbors who believes he had. During the past three or four years he was singularly and continually afflicted with disease which gave him unremitting suffering, but he seldom complained and during his easier hours his naturally buoyant nature shone out through the clouds and brightened all about him.
A good man is gone from among us, and the place that knew him will know him no more; but his memory is cherished in the hearts of all who knew the kind-hearted, good old pioneer. May he rest in peace!
