Newburg – Luverne R. Smith, 79, a lifelong resident of the Newburg community, died Thursday, Jan. 2, at Friendship manor in Grinnell.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.
The Rev. Noland Kelsey of Newton will conduct services. Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery west of Newburg.
Family visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials to the Hickory Grove Church may be left at the funeral home.
Survivors are his wife, Opal; a son, Terry of Kellogg; a daughter, Nancy Burnham of Kellogg; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters, Betty Cooper of Kellogg and Virginia Herrod of Tama.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a member of the Hickory Grove Church and the Farm Bureau.
The son of Ray and Lottie Reynolds Smith, he was born Oct. 31, 1912 in Newburg, attended rural schools and was a graduate of Newburg High School.
He was married to Opal Cooper Dec. 21, 1934 at Newton.
Mr. Smith farmed in Hickory Grove Township until his retirement in 1990.
He also was a bus driver in the Grinnell-Newburg School District until 1979.
