Sudden Summons - The announcement of the death of Mrs. Jacob Holdefer on Tuesday morning which occurred the evening before was a great shock to relatives, neighbors and friends. On Friday, she complained of severe pains in the head and on Sunday they returned with increased vigor resulting in paralysis of the brain. On Monday evening after a brief illness her soul was summoned to its Maker. The funeral services were conducted on Wednesday from the M.E. Church, the large auditorium being filled with friends who were present to pay the last tribute of respect to her loving memory. The floral decorations were many and beautiful. The following beautiful tribute from her pastor Rev. A. M. Shea, expresses the sentiments of all who knew this noble, Christian woman. Mrs. Kate Holdefer, the eldest daughter of the late Sam'l and Mrs. Margaret Butters, was born in Adams County, Ohio March 8, 1853 and died at her home in this city Monday, January 28, 1895 aged 41 years, 10 months and 20 days. On June 24, 1891 she was united in marriage to Mr. Jacob Holdefer by the Rev. A. H. Rusk. During a revival meeting held by Rev. M. F. Slusser in 1871, she united with the M.E. Church of this place. In this fellowship she has been a benediction to the church, a blessing to humanity and an inspiration to all. For eight years she has been entrusted with the responsibilities of a Sunday school class. By her accomplishments and fidelity she did much to advance her Master's kingdom. She was one of the charter members of the Epworth League and by her death the first link has been broken in the chain which binds the young people to the church and Christ its founder. An obedient child, a loving wife, a beautiful Christian character has fallen asleep in Him who is the resurrection and the Life.
The following persons from abroad were present to pay the last tribute of respect to the memory of Mrs. Jacob Holdefer at her funeral on Wednesday: Mr. George Holdefer, Des Moines, Mr. Charles Holdefer, Boyden, Iowa, Mr. Phillip Holdefer, Mr. Henry Holdefer, Newton, Iowa, Mr. John Holdefer, Keokuk, Iowa, Miss Phoebe McMullen, Ervin, Iowa and Mrs. Mark Kingdon, Yale, Iowa.
