Betty Ann Joiner
November 6, 1923 - August 16, 2021

Betty Ann Joiner, formerly of Monroe, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 16, 2021 at age 97, surrounded by family.

Betty was the only child of Arthur and Eleanor (Holmes) Knox, born in Nehawka, Nebraska, on November 6, 1923. She lived her formative years in Omaha, and on the family farm in Dunbar, Nebraska.

At the age of 17, Betty was united in marriage to the love of her life, Oliver W. Joiner II, on July 5, 1941. As a young bride during WWII, Betty traveled across the country with her newborn baby, Judi, while Ollie received his Air Force training, then kept things running on the homefront for the three years he served in England. During their long, happy marriage they lived and raised their family of four children in Peru, Nebraska and the Iowa communities of Rippey, Cumberland, Griswold, Walker, Menlo, and Monroe.

Betty devoted her life to her husband and family. She used her ingenuity and sewing skills to clothe her loved ones, craft numerous quilts, and even create her daughter, Judi's, wedding dress and son, Clay's prom tuxedo. Her family always looked forward to her delicious home cooking -- especially her penny rolls, potato salad, cake and pies -- all served in a meticulously kept home.

In 2016, Betty moved to the Iowa City area to be closer to her daughters and their families, residing at both Walden Place, and Keystone Place at Forevergreen. She enjoyed her time there listening to the many musical performers, playing bingo, and charming both residents and staff with her kind nature and quick sense of humor.

Those left to honor her memory include her children -- Judi McCright, Clay (Pam) Joiner, Kris (Gary) Ortale; daughter-in-law Jan Joiner; eight grandchildren -- Robyn and Scott (Debbie) McCright, Lisa, Laura, Tony, and Drew Ortale, Destiny and Blake Joiner; and three great-grandchildren -- Brandon (Hazuki) and Brycen McCright, and Amavely Joiner. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, Bill Joiner, and her son-in-law, Rex McCright.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 2:00 PM at the Monroe United Methodist Church, in Monroe, Iowa. Family and friends will be greeted from 1:00 pm until service time. Burial will take place at a later date at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City, Nebraska.

Memorials may be directed to the Monroe United Methodist Church or Care Initiatives Hospice-Cedar Rapids and condolences may be left for the family at coburnfuneralhomes.com.
