Norma “Norma Jean” Darlene (Harger) Counter, 78, died on Friday, August 13, 2021, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. A visitation will be held at 5:00 p.m., Monday, August 16, 2021, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. A private family graveside service will be held. Memorials to the Newton Public Library may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home.

Norma, the daughter of Frank and Edith Irene (Burt) Harger, was born on January 31, 1943, in Knoxville. She lived the last five years of her life in Newton, previously living in Wichita, Kansas, and Yates Center, Kansas. Norma loved to cook and worked in restaurants as a cook and bartender. In her free time, she played BINGO and cards, and she enjoyed being with her family and friends.

Norma is survived by her children, Jodi (Gerry) Kahler of Kalona, Jeffrey (JoEllyn) Chesick of Marshalltown, Jennifer Maxfield of Newton, James (Carrie) Chesick of Haysville, Kansas, Joyce (John) Johnson of Green Mountain, and Cassandra (Juan) Lopez of Wichita, Kansas; brother, Frank (Janet) Harger of Newton; sister, Evelyn Mohler of Newton; and her many adored grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Julie Fields; son-in-law, Al Maxfield; brothers, Vernon Harger and Marvin “Bill” Harger; and brother-in-law Dale Mohler.
