Sylvia Vander Molen Langstraat

Sylvia Klyn, daughter of Gerrit A. and Katherine (Vander Wiel) Klyn, was born on March 27, 1925, at Otley, Iowa. She attended Fifield Country Grade School and began working at The Rolscreen Company in Pella, Iowa. On November 16, 1944, she was united in marriage with Cecil Vander Molen, Jr. at Otley. Following their marriage they began farming in the Peoria/Taintor, Iowa area until Cecil suffered a massive heart attack. In November of 1977 they moved into Pella, did some traveling to various states and spent some of the winters in Orlando, Florida near their son, Carl Gene and his wife, Marcy (Vander Linden) Vandermolen.

Cecil’s death came there on January 7, 1981, at the age of 59 years. Sylvia did wall papering and painting for others and enjoyed crocheting and embroidering. She was baptized and made profession of her faith at the Otley Christian Reformed Church in Otley. After marriage they were members of the Peoria CRC and made the Second Christian Reformed Church in Pella their church home after moving into Pella. Sylvia was a member of the Christian Fellowship Hour, the Busy Bee Club, and volunteered for 10 years at the Pella Community Hospital snack bar as a member of the auxiliary.

On December 29, 1981, she and Anthony Langstraat Sr. were united in marriage. They enjoyed their retirement years together in Florida, traveling to Europe and playing cards. Sylvia’s family then grew to include his eight children: Larry Langstraat and Pat Braaksma of Monroe, Iowa, Wayne and JoAnn Langstraat of Columbia, Iowa, Tony Jr. and Ruth Langstraat of Pella, Diana and Dave Van Veen of Monroe, Dennis Langstraat of Harvey, Iowa, Janice and Dean Rankin of Pella, Janet and Roger DeMoss of New Sharon, Iowa, Faye and Dan Steffen of Knoxville, Iowa.

On October 3, 2007, her husband Anthony Langstraat Sr. passed away at the age of 85 years and on October 18, 2018, her son, Carl Gene, passed away at the age of 69 years. Sylvia is survived by her daughter-in-law, Marcy Vandermolen of Bradenton, Florida; her four grandchildren and their families:

Sylvia leaves seven step-children, 23 step-grandchildren and many step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren. Of her original family she leaves four brothers: Marvin Klyn of Jenison, Michigan, Marion Klyn and his wife, Glenda, Sidney Klyn, Lester Klyn and his wife, Linda, her sister-in-laws: Lois (Ray) Klyn, Lois (John) Klyn; and a sister-in-law, Martena (Vander Molen) De Groot all of Pella, Iowa; along with many nieces and nephews. Sylvia was preceded in death by her husbands, Cecil Vander Molen, Jr. and Anthony Langstraat Sr.; her son Carl Vandermolen; her step-daughter Faye and her husband, Dan Steffen, step-daughters-in-law, Linda (Larry) Langstraat, Norma (Dennis) Langstraat; her parents, Gerrit A. and Katherine Klyn; her two sisters and their husbands: Ruth and Henry Vande Wall, Marge and Arthur Sneller; six brothers: Kenneth who died in infancy, John Klyn, Gerald Klyn and his wife, Margaret, Arthur Klyn and his wife, Elizabeth, Lawrence Klyn and his wife, Valda, Raymond Klyn and his wife Angelyn; and three sisters-in-law: Phyllis (Marvin) Klyn, Joyce (Lester) Klyn, Mary (Sidney) Klyn. Sylvia was also preceded in death by parents-in-law, Martin and Tillie (Ozinga) Vander Molen; and the following sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Margaret and Case Boerefijn, Jacob and Nellie Vander Molen, Ben and Christine Vander Molen, William and Leona Vander Molen, Anna and Ralph Corbin, Rachel and Cornie Vander Hart, Louis and Mabel Vander Molen, and Ray De Groot.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at 10:30 am.

Second Christian Reformed Church, Pella, Iowa.

Interment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery at Pella, Iowa.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.
