Rites Wednesday For J. R. Beals
Baxter-Colfax (Special) – Funeral services for Jay Richard Beals, 59, of Colfax, a lifelong resident of Jasper county, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Colfax Christian church.
The Rev. Thomas Fogelson of Des Moines will conduct the services. Burial will be in Union Chapel cemetery near Ira.
Walters funeral home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Beals died Sunday at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines.
Mr. Beals is survived by his wife, two sons, Richard of Colfax and Arthur at home; a daughter, Mrs. Howard (Virginia) Hunter of Colfax; four grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Beals of Colfax and Stanley Beals of Collins; and seven sisters, Mrs. Bert (Gertrude) Cross of Baxter, Mrs. Minnie Dodd and Mrs. Mary Long, both of Des Moines, Mrs. Clarence (Bernice) Von Hagen of Baxter, Mrs. Al (Fay) Bautel of Baxter; Mrs. Oscar (Amy) Norris of Kasson, Minn., and Mrs. Orva Shenkle of St. Anthony.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dale.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beals, he was born April 16, 1900 at Baxter where he was educated.
He was married August 7, 1925 to Lula Kerns at Ira.
Mr. Beals farmed in the Colfax area.

Jay Richard Beals, son of Clara and Richard Beals, was born April 16, 1900 and passed away January 31, 1960 at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, after several months of illness and recent surgery.
He was a lifetime resident of Jasper County with the exception of a few years in Story and Polk counties. Having been born near Baxter, Iowa, he attended schools in that vicinity.
On August 7, 1924, he was united in marriage to Lulu E. Kerns. To this union was born three sons and one daughter, Richard and Mrs. Harold Hunter of Colfax and Arthur, at home. Baby Jay, Jr., preceded him in infancy.
Three beloved grandsons and one granddaughter are left to mourn his passing.
He grew to manhood on the farm and followed this profession with the exception of a few years. He was a true and helping friend to anyone in need a good neighbor ready to help in all community betterment, a devoted father with the welfare of his family uppermost in his life.
His parents, two sisters and one brother preceded him in death. Seven sisters and two brothers survive.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 3rd from the Christian church in Colfax at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Tom Fogleson of Des Moines officiating.
Burial was in Union Chapel at Ira, Iowa.
