Oliver Wilson Passed Away Monday A.M.
Was A Native of Ireland But Had Spent More Than 50 Years Here
Oliver Wilson, a pioneer resident of this community, passed away at his home in this city early Monday morning following an illness of a few weeks.
Mr. Wilson was a native of Ireland, but came to this county fifty-three years ago and has been one of the thrifty farmers of this community for many years. Several years ago, with his family, he moved into Colfax, but he never lost interest in his farm and was almost a daily visitor at the place.
Oliver Wilson, son of Oliver and Elizabeth Wilson, was born May 24th, 1859 in Castle Fenn, Donegal county, Ireland. He passed away at his home in Colfax, January 15th, 1934, at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 21 days.
He was united in marriage to Almeda Cannon, September, 1891, at the home of the bride’s parents at Metz.
Mr. Wilson was the last of a family of eight children, seven sons and one daughter. The last to go was Mrs. Rebecca McWhirter, who died two years ago last May.
Mr. Wilson leaves to mourn his going, his wife, two sons, Howard of Colfax and Earl of Maxwell, two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Lester of Newton and Mrs. Dorothy Stillians of Colfax, ten grandchildren, one son-in-law, one brother-in-law and a number of nephews and nieces.
In early life he identified himself with the Presbyterian church, and at the time of his death was a member of this church in which the service was held.
He came to America in 1880 and had a share in the hardships all newcomers to our shores endure. But by hard toil and careful management he was able to support himself and family at his chosen occupation, that of a farmer.
His friends are many and he will be missed not only by the immediate family circle, but by his neighbors and fellow citizens. His chair will be vacant, but he will not be forgotten.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Presbyterian church with Dr. Theodore Morning officiating. Mrs. G. E Tilton and Mrs. H. J. Eastman sang, “The Old Rugged Cross,” and “In the Garden”. Mrs. S. E. Tennant presided at the organ. The pallbearers were Tom Hughes, Sam Lester, Lou Clark, Fred Rorabaugh, R. E. Bond, and W. C. Stouffer.
Interment was had in the Rorabaugh Cemetery.
