MONROE — Gladys Van Veen, 85, of Monroe, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.

Visitation will be held today at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe from 2 to 8 p.m., where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Methodist Church or the Monroe Emergency Unit.

The daughter of Albert and Gora (Vos) Verwers, she was born Dec. 29, 1919, in Mahaska County. On Dec. 31, 1940, she married John Van Veen in Killduff. She lived on the farm following her marriage and moved to Monroe in 1962, where she and her husband owned and operated a Western Auto store until 1967. She drove a school bus for 14 years and also mowed the cemetery for 11 years. She was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Sheryl Van Veen of Newton, David and Diana Van Veen of Monroe and Duane Van Veen of Newton; a daughter-in-law, Donna Van Veen of Monroe; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a son, Dennis; a brother, Andrew Verwers; and two sisters, Mabel Parish and Hazel Verwers.
