Velna J Peterson

Velna Jean Peterson was born on April 21, 1934 in Lampson, Wisconsin. She was the oldest of five children born to James and Ann (Hogen) Clark. She was raised in Zumbrota, Minnesota and graduated from Zumbrota High School. Velna then attended Winona State University and earned a degree in Education.

On June 4, 1955, Velna was united in marriage with Leonard Merton Peterson, and to this union one son was born, Marvin. Velna worked as a teacher for several years before beginning her career in the insurance industry. She worked for several insurance companies during these years, but her experience at Northwest Mutual Life Company as an agent was especially rewarding. She later retired from Principal in Des Moines.

Leonard passed away in 1996 while they were living in Prairie City, Iowa. Velna moved back to Minnesota, then returned to Iowa and settled in Pella nearly ten years ago. Velna passed away on April 16, 2021, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House at the age of 86, just five days short of her birthday.

She is survived by her son, Marvin Peterson of Lovilia, Iowa; her sister, Anna Lexvold of Minnesota and her brother, Chris (Janelle) Clark of California; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers, Byron Clark and James Clark, Jr. Velna was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Pella. She also volunteered her time teaching English as a second language to families in need. She will be remembered for her large vegetable gardens and her cooking skills.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service.
