November 5, 1939 ~ April 22, 2021 (age 81)

Harry Eugene “Gene” Wharff, 81, of Newton died on Thursday, April 22, 2021, at his home. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 21, 2021, at the Newton Union Cemetery Veteran’s Section. Immediately following the graveside service until 4:00 pm. the family will greet friends for a celebration of Gene’s life at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to the VFW Post 1655 or the American Legion Post 111 may be left at the funeral home.

Gene, the son of Leon Roy and Lois Louise (Stevenson) Wharff, was born on November 5, 1939 in Colfax. He grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1957. Gene served his country in the U.S. Army as a medic and a marksman during the Berlin Crisis from 1959-1962. On May 11, 1963, Gene was united in marriage with Sherry Eilander in Newton. He worked as a tire builder at Firestone Retread in Des Moines for 23 years, retiring in 1985. Gene was a member of the VFW Post 1655 and the American Legion Post 111.

Gene was a great guy that loved to tease and make people laugh. He was all about family and enjoyed family reunions and family fishing trips to Minnesota. He and Sherry graciously took care of many family members throughout the years. Gene was an avid Hawkeye fan. His daughter’s loving referred to their dad as the “Supreme Commander” of their family.

Gene is survived by his wife Sherry Wharff of Newton; daughters, Rhonda (Mark) Knopf of Newton and Gina (Mike) Stech of Branson, Missouri; grandchildren, Ashley Stech of Branson, Nathan (Lynsey) Stech of Prairie Village, Kansas, Jonathan (Jasmine) Stech of Forsyth, Missouri; and Ethan Stech of Springfield, Missouri; his great-grandchildren, Grayson, Elley, and Oliver Stech and James and Joel Stech; brother, Leon R. (Bev) Wharff of Newton; and sister, Sherry Wharff of Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronnie Wharff and sister, Linda (Gordy) Jones.
