Elmeda Laverne Mahl, 88, of Vancouver, Wash., formerly of Newton, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at Paradise Home Care Center in Vancouver, Wash.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newton with the Rev. Carrie Lewis officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

The daughter of Cecil Herbert and Linda M. (Olson) Carpenter, she was born Aug. 11, 1916, in Oberon, N.D. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1935. On Aug. 10, 1940, she married Elmer Mahl at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She worked as a deli cook for 20 years for Stockton's Grocery Store and Super Value. She enjoyed fishing in Minnesota for more than 50 years, gardening and all outdoor work.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Donna Mahl of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gerald Carpenter of Romona, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Harold and Cecil.
