Rhita J. (Freland) Haas, 53, of Newton died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at her home.

Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church, 108 S. East Ave. in Baxter, with the Rev. Gene Bucklin officiating. Burial will be at Ashton Cemetery in rural Mingo. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

The family will greet friends immediately following the service with lunch at the church. Memorials in her name may be left at the church or may be mailed to Mary Lou Freland, 207 S. East Ave., Baxter 50028.

The daughter of Charles and Mary Lou (Pershall) Freland, she was born April 29, 1952, in Des Moines. She graduated from Mingo High School in 1970. She was a chiropractic assistant at Hunter Clinic in Newton and previously worked for US Bank in Newton. She grew up in Baxter, Collins and Mingo area and was a resident of Newton since 2001. She enjoyed eagle watching.

Survivors include a step-son, Mark E. Haas of Nevada; step-daughter, Kendra Medus of Reinbeck; her mother of Baxter; brother, Jeff (Valerie) Freland of Marshalltown; three sisters, Debbie (Bob) McCarl of Des Moines, Beth (Mark) McLain of Prior Lake, Minn., and Shelley (Bill) Hiney of Baxter; two half-brothers, Mark (Raeann) Freland of Palm Coast, Fla., and Chuck Freland of Hollywood, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her father; step-father, Jim Freland; son, PO3 Michael J. Haas. She died in a fire with her longtime companion, Richard L. Feehan.
