Winona E. Graham, 98, of Newton died Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Private family graveside services will be held Saturday with the Rev. Don Freeman, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church in Newton, officiating. Burial will be in Prairie City.

Friends may call Friday at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton from 5 to 7 p.m. The family will be present from 5:30 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The Salvation Army in Newton.

The daughter of Walter G. and Tama R. (Morgan) Simpson, she was born March 2, 1907, in Davison, S.D. She was a high school graduate. She married Orie Guthrie. They later divorced. In 1945, she married George Graham in Kansas. She was a resident of Jasper County since 1960. She was a nurse's aid for 20 years at Skiff Medical Center, worked at J.C. Penney and the Maytag Company.

Mrs. Graham worked on the farm, canning, gardening and tending her flowers. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Newton and served as secretary for Palo Alto Grange. She enjoyed volunteering for The Salvation Army.

Survivors include a son, Robert Guthrie of Newton; a step-daughter, Mercedes Bocher of Wisconsin; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Glenn; step-daughter, Gwendolyn Waddle; a grandson; two brothers, Kenneth and Russell Simpson; and an infant sister.
