BAXTER — Shirley J. (Townsend) Christain, 51, of Baxter died Thursday, May 12, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services were held today at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, where the Rev. Jim Olson of Zoar Church in rural Newton officiated. Burial was at Restland Cemetery in Baxter.

Memorials will be accepted to Zoar Church or to the John Stoddard Cancer Center and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Harold M. "Doc" and Gerry L. (Schmidt) Townsend, she was born Aug. 14, 1953, in Marshalltown. She graduated from Baxter Community High School in 1971. In February 1981, she married Tom Iverson in Baxter. She later married B. J. Christain on May 14, 1988, in Baxter. She worked as a client transaction specialist for Principal Financial Group for more than 27 years.
Mrs. Christain enjoyed camping, crocheting afghans, music, the Internet and chocolate. She was a member of Zoar Church and the Hard-core Campers Corps.

She lived south of Collins from 1953 to 1964 and was a resident of Baxter since 1964.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Bill Iverson of Newton; her mother, Gerry Townsend (Lyle) Stubbs of Kearney, Neb.; and a sister, Sandi (Greg) Tyler of Baxter.

She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Mary Sue.
