Charles H. Bryant, 59, of Newton died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Eric Johnson of Community Reformed Church in Newton officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Project Awake and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Arlie and Syvilla (Steuermann) Bryant, he was born March 26, 1945, in Wenatchee, Wash. He graduated from Cherokee High School in 1964. On June 25, 1977, he married Kathleen J. Norris in Newton. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and served from 1964 to 1968. He was a switching systems technician for GTE, worked in the Newton office for 28 years and retired in 1998.
Mr. Bryant enjoyed cooking, gardening, biking, hiking, flying kites, swimming and building things out of wood.

He is survived by his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Nichole Bryant of Wichita, Kan.; a daughter, Erin Bryant of Davenport; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Wayne Bryant of Panama and Ron and LaVonne Bryant of Cherokee; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Barry Boggs of Cherokee; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Peggy Robeson.
