Ill 20 months
The East End pastor, who came to Ottumwa four years ago, died at the church manse, 121 South Iowa avenue, following an illness of 20 months with cancer of the lung. He continued his work in the church until May 19 of this year.
He attended Highland Park college at Des Moines, was a graduate of the Omaha Theological seminary, and did postgraduate work at the Presbyterian Theological seminary of Chicago. He was licensed to preach in 1909, although he had begun preaching when he was 17 years old. His first parish consisted of five churches. He later held pastorates in Hamburg, Iowa, South Sioux City, Neb., LeMars, Adair, and Knoxville. He was a member of the Presbytery of Iowa and of the Synod of Iowa. He was vice president of the Young Peoples Christian Endeavor of the state of Iowa and had served as assistant district commissioner of scouting in northwestern Iowa. He had been a member of both Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, and was a member of the Masonic lodge.
He had served as president and vice president of the ministerial associations in the various communities where he lived, and had been active in civic affairs.
Born at Dumont
He was born at Dumont, Iowa, the son of Phillip and Martha Pfaltzgraff. His survivors include his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Dewitt Stauffer of Sutherland, Neb., whose husband is also a Presbyterian minister, and Mrs. Wendell Dahms of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; three brothers, The Rev. Phillip Pfaltzgraff of Meservey, and Henry and Edwin Pfaltzgraff, both of Allison, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Gusford Stock and Mrs. David Lupkes of Dumont and Mrs. Fred Noelte of Ackley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and one sister.
One of the Rev. Mr. Pfaltzgraff’s last requests was that his eyes be given to the eye bank of the University of Iowa that someone else might see.
The Ottumwa Ministerial association has postponed its regular meeting from Wednesday to Friday at 10:30 in the First Methodist church, so the members may attend the funeral.
